This is part one in a series on weight loss in Houma (Hint: it isn't all about the scale!).
You have probably heard that often-quoted statistic that 95% of dieters regain their weight within 3 years. You might have also heard that the numbers actually get worse after 3 years. So what’s a body to do in Houma, Louisiana (the South isn't exactly known for diet foods) for achieving, and then maintaining, long term beauty, which can start with weight loss?
That certainly depends on one’s definition, but one way to think about the situation is this: a beautiful body is one that works beautifully. Not-so-coincidentally, keeping your body “working beautifully,” gives most of us the bodies that we find appealing. Consider: strength training can give us the toning that many want. Healthy nutrition can provide the “glowing” skin, the working joints, etc., that keeping us looking and moving as we want to. Basically, we need to achieve functional excellence through nutrition and exercise, and this requires commitment. Commitment to long term change, and that means that our routines, in hygiene, fitness, nutrition, etc., must be sustainable (more on this later, but sustainable fitness is our focus at CrossFit Houma).
If all of this seems like a “long road” to trek, imagine living for a long time without good health. Sick. Frustrated on a daily basis, because you don’t move, feel and look like you want to. This is where we come back to the problem with certain types of diets, diet pills, or anything else that doesn’t help us change the habits that brought to our unhealthy state in the first place. We need to research what will work for each of us in the long term, and go about setting those changes in motion. This can begin with finding a workout buddy, trying a new sport (Houma even has adult kickball and soccer leagues) joining a gym, a yoga studio, or going gluten-free (and more!), but it’s best to make a plan, write it down, and prepare. If you don't know where to start, CrossFit Houma has personal trainers to help you make that plan appropriate for you. Don’t let your job or peer pressure get in your way, because you control your exercise and what goes in your body more than anything else in your life. Remember that you, your health, and that beautiful body are all worth the effort.
